What is SoulCollage®?
And Why You Need It
SoulCollage® is a creative method dreamed up and developed by the late psychotherapist, Seena Frost. The method allows for exploration of inner parts, community, energy sources, and archetype influence in our lives. Think parts work, but with visuals.
Participants collage on on 5’’ x 8’’ mat board to create individual cards for separate entities/energies (referred to as “neters”). Following the creation of a card there is a processing where a message is communicated about why this energy showed up today and what wisdom it has to share with you.
SoulCollage® has grown from experimentation in a small clinical consultation group decades ago to a trademarked method with certified facilitators all over the world!
I was first introduced to SoulCollage® in 2016 while working at a creative expressive group therapy practice in New Hampshire. I attended a small introductory workshop, fell in love, and haven’t stopped since. The visual component of external and internal presences in life resonates not only with my visual brain, but also with my desire for meaning making and cultivation of connection with self and others. I couldn’t get enough and decided to attend a facilitator training; I became a certified SoulCollage facilitator in February 2019.
Since then I’ve been hosting SoulCollage® workshops in person and online as a form of self exploration and self-care, primarily holding space for other therapists, social workers, mental health workers, educators, and other allied professionals.
Sharing and holding space for hundreds of people over the past six years has taught me many things, some of which I’d like to share with you now 😊
We are all starved for deeper meaning and connection.
Nearly everyone I’ve ever hosted is struck by the depth this process is capable of and the speed at which we can become more connected with those parts of us that show up as well as those we share these spaces with.
Creativity is crucial for our well-being and self-care.
Creativity offers us so many benefits! Here are a few…
increases overall wellbeing
increases expression
elicits calm and relaxation
increases self-compassion
elicits feelings of empowerment and achievement
increases interpersonal connection with those you share the experience with
Professionals need more spaces where they can be in community with other professionals to focus not on clients, but on their own work and needs.
We have colleagues and co-workers, we have supervision, we have peer consultation, we have our friends and family but we don’t have a space where we can come together in a safe space, take off our professional mask, and tend to our spirits and our souls that are often tired and weary from our work, our lives, our society.
As helping professionals we frequently forget or don’t prioritize space and for our own mental wellbeing. We get caught up in the care of others, in managing all of the day to day tasks, usually leaving ourselves at the bottom of the list where we never got to it because there’s always so much more to be done.
There is also a stigma around professionals seeking clinical care for themselves, which is a separate topic worth of it’s own blog post, but I mention it here because sometimes non-clinical atmospheres can feel more comfortable, more accessible, and more welcoming for those of us who engage in clinical work throughout each week.
Novelty fuels excitement!
The novelty of something new and fun can be so engaging that the fear of doing something new is overshadowed by the curiosity to explore.
Neurodivergent folks resonate strongly with SoulCollage®
Probably because we are already looking at the world from a lens of systemic intersections and our inherent creative qualities have an opportunity to shine with this method.
We need to be able to show up as our whole selves.
We can often find ourselves in situations where certain parts of us are acknowledged and respected while other parts of us need to stay hidden or suppressed due to the discomfort of others. When we can authentically be our whole selves with a group of safe and understanding folxs who are doing the same, community building is a natural outcome.
Further self-discovery and exploration are possible when we can just be, safely.
Therapy isn’t the only way to find healing.
While we all know the power of professionally trained and administered mental healthcare, our culture is seriously lacking in its ability to honor and recognize alternative methods for soul enrichment and emotional expression. While SoulCollage® is therapeutic in nature, it does not need to be administered or facilitated within therapy. The method is accessible to those who are drawn to it - anyone can enjoy it personally and/or become a facilitator. It’s benefits span broadly and are meant to be taken into other community spaces (like community centers, places of worship, art studios, and more).
SoulCollage® can help you explore yourself and your own needs.
When we sit with ourselves and allow our parts to reveal themselves to us we have the opportunity to commune with and better understand them. This practice builds on itself over time creating a depth of self-awareness and understanding that often takes your breath away.
SoulCollage®is a powerful method of self-discovery and connection. I encourage anyone interested to give it a try, attending an intro workshop is a great place to start! You can find more info on https://soulcollage.com/
